The inclusion of 12 works of the Belgian avant-garde-painter Marthe ‘Tour’
Donas in the stupendous Der Sturm-exhibition at the Von der Heydt-Museum in
Wuppertal this spring, is likely to revive intrest in her intriguing life
and art. During several years around 1920 Marthe Donas – who signed her work
at the time ‘Tour’ Donas – was active in the circles of La Section d’Or
(Archipenko, Survage, Gontcharowa, d’Oettingen) and De Stijl (Van Doesburg,
Mondrian). Her work was illustrated in art reviews as De Stijl, Der Sturm,
Noi and Sélection and shown in England, France, Belgium, Switserland,
Germany and Italy.
For a major scientific monography on the artist, which will be published in
2014, we are still tracing works by Marthe ‘Tour’ Donas, predating
1927. We know Herwarth Walden, who showed her work at his gallery from 1920
to 1924 had more than 30 paintings of her in his collection. Through the
years we’ve managed allready to locate half of them. It is possible that
many more are still in private collections in Germany.
If you own works by Marthe ‘Tour’ Donas, or have access to documents
providing new information on this artist we would highly appreciate if you
could provide us with more details.
Full discretion will naturally be guaranteed.
